For Cheryl Sindergard of Plover, healthcare has always been close to home —and close to heart. A patient of Pocahontas Community Hospital and UnityPoint Clinics in Pocahontas and Laurens for over 50 years, Cheryl has trusted our team through life’s biggest milestones, including the birth of her son at PCH in 1973. Today, she sees Kylie Maurer, PA, at the Laurens Clinic and couldn’t be more grateful.

“Kylie is always so kind and really listens, ” Cheryl shared. “She’s willing to try different forms of care to figure out what’s going on. When I started having blood sugar issues, she worked so hard to get me on the Dexcom G7—it’s been a lifesaver.”

The accessibility and convenience of healthcare in rural Pocahontas County is something Cheryl doesn’t take for granted.

“With the clinics and hospital just 13 miles away, it’s amazing what’s available to us. I can see my providers, go to the dentist or chiropractor, stop at Woods for groceries, visit the bank or the pharmacy—all right here in town.”

Cheryl has also received care from the Diabetes Center team, who visit PCH on the first and third Wednesdays each month.

“They are phenomenal,” she said. “So are the ladies in the laboratory and radiology departments— they’re top notch.”

She also gave high praise to Kammi, RN, in the Toenail Clinic, and to the physical therapists in the Rehab Services Department, who have helped her stay active and strong. But one of Cheryl’s most meaningful experiences came in a time of great personal loss. When her husband passed away in the PCH Hospice Family Room, she was overwhelmed by the compassion she received.

“It’s a beautiful space to spend those final moments with someone you love. Everyone at PCH did everything they could to help me through those hard days,” she said.

The Grief Group led by Rachel Olson, LBSW, also played a big role in her healing.

“Those sessions helped me feel connected and not so alone.” Reflecting on it all, Cheryl says simply, “I’m just very thankful for the services offered here— and for how we’re treated like family every time we visit.”
