Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy works with patients to reduce pain and improve their general mobility and function. More specifically our Physical Therapists can help you to:

  • improve your ability to walk safely through strengthening, balance retraining and use of appropriate assistive devices such as a cane or walker
  • decrease pain through the use of manual therapy or modalities such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation
  • improve general body strength and educate you in an appropriate home exercise program

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy works with people to improve their abilities to participate in daily activities in their environments. More specifically our Occupational Therapists can help you to:

  • improve poor arm and hand function through strengthening, re-education, home exercise programs and custom splint fabrication
  • improve independence and safety in self care skills such as dressing and feeding or independent living skills such as cooking, money management-this can be accomplished through re-training or through the use of adaptive devices or environmental modifications
  • improve seating and wheelchair mobility through a comprehensive assessment and fitting of adaptive equipment

Speech Language Pathology

Speech Language Pathology works with patients of all ages to improve their ability to communicate and interact with their environment.  More specifically our Speech Therapists can help you to:

  • improve your ability to communicate through written or spoken language
  • improve safety and independence with swallowing  and manage solid foods
  • improve your ability to process and act upon information when thinking or memory skills are impaired

Here at Pocahontas Community Hospital we are pleased to have a therapy staff that is highly trained and continually striving to improve their clinical skills. Our therapists travel to attend continuing education programs throughout the year and our clinics offer annual in-house training programs to help our staff become competent with specialized programs and new techniques. The ultimate goal of our therapy programs is to help you return to your prior level of independence in all of your daily activities. Our therapists work with you to improve strength and specific abilities in the work, sports, home and leisure activities that are important to you! Each treatment plan is individualized to help you return to the life activities you enjoyed prior to your injury or illness.

Our Physical and Occupational Therapists work in conjunction with your physician to reduce your pain and discomfort. Interventions may include manual therapy, tool assisted manual therapy, massage, soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release and modalities such as ultrasound, iontophoresis, electrical stimulation and personalized home exercise and stretching programs.
